Japanese 4x4s like the Patrol, Land Cruiser, LX and QX80 mostly use the JIS D31 case, with 105D31 the common choice for 80–100Ah. European SUVs such as the G-Class, Defender and Range Rover use the DIN H8 (L5) or larger, usually AGM, and often need battery registration. American SUVs like the Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade use an AGM H6 or H7.

Matching the case matters as much as the capacity: the hold-down, terminal side and cable length are made for one size, and a battery that does not sit square will not last on rough tracks.

Dual-battery setups for fridges, winches and lights

A fridge running overnight at camp can flatten a single starting battery by morning. A dual-battery setup adds a second, deep-cycle battery that feeds the accessories, with an isolator that links the two while the engine runs and separates them when it stops, so the starting battery is always kept for the engine.
