Why EVs still have a 12V or 16V battery

An electric car does not crank an engine, but it still needs a low-voltage supply. When you approach the car, the low-voltage battery powers the door handles, the screen and the control units, and closes the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack. Once the car is on, a DC-DC converter keeps the low-voltage battery charged from the main pack.

That means a dead low-voltage battery leaves the car locked and asleep even with a full charge in the main pack, and plugging in the charger will not help.

Lead-acid vs lithium low-voltage batteries

Earlier Teslas, the Porsche Taycan, the Jaguar I-Pace and many Chinese EVs use a conventional 12V AGM or lead-acid battery, which we supply and fit like any other. BYD uses a 12V lithium iron phosphate battery on its pure EVs, and newer Teslas use a lithium-ion low-voltage battery of around 16V.

Lithium low-voltage batteries are tied to the model and build and are not interchangeable with lead-acid units. We confirm the exact part by VIN and check availability before booking, rather than promising one from stock.

Alerts by brand

Tesla shows a message that the 12V or low-voltage battery needs service, often weeks before it fails, and the car may stop sleeping normally. BYD and Zeekr models usually show a low-voltage battery or power system warning on the screen, and some limit functions until it is checked. On many EVs the first sign is simply a car that does not respond to the key.

Do not ignore the alert in summer. Heat speeds up the decline, and a car parked at the airport for two weeks is the most common call we get.

How the car is opened when the battery is dead

With no low-voltage power, door handles and the frunk release may not work. On the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, a pair of wires behind the front tow-hook cover releases the frunk when an external 12V supply is connected, which gives access to the battery. Many other EVs have a mechanical key blade hidden in the fob for the driver's door and a manual bonnet release inside.

The technician carries the supply and tools to do this without forcing panels, then powers the car up before replacing the battery.
