How far can I drive on a space-saver spare?
Space-saver spares are built for short distances at reduced speed, usually no more than 80 km/h, and the limit is printed on the tyre or a sticker on the wheel. Use it to reach a tyre shop rather than for days of normal driving, and keep out of the fast lanes on highways while it is fitted.
My car has no spare tyre. What happens then?
Many newer cars come with run-flat tyres or a sealant kit instead of a spare. Run-flats can usually cover a limited distance at reduced speed, as stated in the owner's manual, while a sealant kit closes small holes in the tread. If the sidewall is damaged and neither option works, the technician arranges for the car to be taken to a tyre shop.
Is it safe to change a wheel on the hard shoulder?
Working beside fast traffic carries real risk, so pull as far off the road as you can and wait behind the barrier if there is one. The technician places the warning triangle before starting and, if the shoulder is too narrow, moves the car somewhere safer first. If your car is blocking a lane, call the police on 999 before anything else.
