Coin-cell types by make

Most fobs use a 3V lithium coin cell. The CR2032 is the most common across Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW and Mercedes-Benz keys, while slimmer fobs often take a CR2025 or CR2016 and some larger keys use a CR2450. The exact cell can change between model years, so the technician always checks the one inside your fob before fitting a new one.

Symptoms of a weak key battery

The first sign is range: the remote works from the door but not from across the car park. Then keyless entry becomes hit and miss, the car shows a key warning when you press start, or one button works and another does not. If the fob died suddenly after being dropped or getting wet, it may be the fob rather than the cell, which the test shows straight away.

How common fobs open

Many fobs have a release button for the mechanical key blade; once the blade is out, a small slot lets the case be split. Others clip together around the edge or have a sliding back cover. Prying them with a screwdriver is how cases crack and seals tear, so we use plastic tools and check the rubber seal and button contacts before closing it up.

Starting the car with a dead fob

A dead fob does not mean you are stuck. Use the mechanical key blade hidden inside the fob to open the driver's door. To start, most push-button cars read the fob's chip at close range: hold the fob against the start button and press it with the fob, or place it in the backup slot or marked area in the console or cup holder. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot.

This gets you moving, but the cell still needs replacing, and we can do it wherever the car ends up parked.
