Does Car Insurance Roadside Assistance in the UAE Cover a Dead Battery?

Dubai insurance roadside assistance usually covers a dead battery in one of two ways: a battery boost to get the car started, or a tow to a garage. What it almost never covers is the cost of a new battery. If your battery is simply old and worn out, which in UAE heat is the most common reason it dies, the insurer’s service gets you moving but you still have to buy and fit a replacement yourself.

Knowing that difference helps you decide who to call when the car will not start in a Dubai Marina basement or on the hard shoulder of Sheikh Zayed Road.

What UAE motor insurance roadside assistance usually includes

Roadside assistance is an add-on benefit attached to many UAE motor policies, either built into the plan or sold as an upgrade. It is normally delivered by a specialist assistance company working on the insurer’s behalf, rather than by the insurer’s own staff. The typical menu looks like this:

  • Battery boost or jump start when the battery is flat.
  • Breakdown towing to a garage or agency, usually within set distance or city limits.
  • Accident towing after a collision.
  • Flat tyre change using your own spare.
  • Fuel delivery if you run out, with the fuel itself often charged.
  • Lock-out help if the keys are locked inside.
  • Off-road recovery on some higher plans, useful for desert trips.
  • GCC or Oman extension on some plans.

What it usually does not include

  • The cost of a new battery. A battery is a wear item, like tyres and brake pads.
  • Parts and repairs. If the tow ends at a garage, the repair bill is separate.
  • A diagnosis of why the battery died. A boost restarts the car; it does not tell you whether the battery, the alternator or a parasitic drain is to blame.
  • Unlimited use on every plan. Many plans cap the number of call-outs.

What named UAE insurers publish

We checked what some of the most searched insurers state on their own websites. Benefits change between plans and renewals, so treat this as a guide and rely on your own policy schedule.

Sukoon (formerly Oman Insurance)

Sukoon’s assistance programme page lists dead battery services among its roadside benefits, alongside accident and breakdown towing, flat tyre help, lock-out support, fuel delivery and off-road assistance, available around the clock. Its plan comparison includes a battery boosting row and shows different usage limits by tier, from a fixed number of uses per year on one tier to unlimited on others, with geographic cover ranging from the UAE only up to the wider GCC. Sukoon’s roadside service runs through the IMC Roadside Assistance app, which shares your location and dispatches the nearest responder. That is why searches for “IMC roadside assistance” and “Sukoon roadside assistance” so often lead to the same service.

Liva (formerly RSA in the UAE)

Liva’s UAE car insurance page states that all of its plan tiers include 24/7 roadside assistance, and its top tier lists breakdown recovery. The page does not spell out whether a battery boost is included or how many call-outs are allowed, so check the policy wording or ask Liva directly.

Orient and other insurers

We could not find roadside assistance details for Orient Insurance published on the insurer’s own website, so we are not quoting specific benefits. The same applies to many other UAE insurers: roadside benefits are often listed only in the policy schedule or the plan brochure you receive at purchase. If you hold an Orient policy, or any other, the schedule is the place to look.

We have deliberately not reproduced insurer phone numbers here. Use the number printed on your policy documents or the insurer’s official app, which is always the current one for your plan.

Call-out limits per year

The number of times you can use roadside assistance in a policy year varies from plan to plan. Basic and third-party plans are more likely to have a small fixed limit, while comprehensive and premium plans more often advertise unlimited use. Some plans set separate limits for different services, so you might have unlimited towing but limited non-towing services, or the reverse.

This matters for battery problems in particular. A battery that is failing slowly can need a boost two or three times in a few weeks before it dies completely, which can use up a limited allowance quickly.

Waiting times: insurer assistance vs a direct battery van

Insurer roadside assistance is dispatched from a shared fleet that also handles accidents, tows and tyre changes across the emirate, so how long you wait depends on where you are, the time of day and how busy the network is. A summer evening rush hour, when batteries fail and accidents peak at the same time, is when queues are longest.

A dedicated battery service works differently. Our vans carry testers and replacement batteries and are positioned around Dubai, so a technician usually reaches you within 20 to 35 minutes. More importantly, the visit ends with the problem solved, not just postponed.

Consider the most common scenario: your three-year-old battery dies on a July morning. With insurer assistance, you wait for a boost, the car starts, and you then drive to a battery shop, or the battery dies again at the next stop. With a mobile battery replacement service, the technician tests the battery on arrival, replaces it on the spot if it has failed, and checks the alternator before leaving.

Insurer RSA vs dealer RSA vs a direct battery service

Insurer roadside assistance Dealer roadside assistance (new cars) Direct battery service
Who it covers Policyholders, depending on plan Cars under manufacturer or dealer warranty Anyone
Battery boost Usually included Usually included Yes, with a test
New battery supplied No, cost is yours Sometimes under warranty if the battery is faulty Yes, fitted on the spot
Battery test and diagnosis Not usually Often at the dealer after towing Yes, battery and charging system
Towing Yes, within limits Often to the dealer Arranged when the fault is not the battery
Call-out limits Varies by plan Varies by programme None
Best for Accidents, flat tyres, breakdowns not caused by the battery Faults on a car still under warranty A dead or weak battery you want fixed in one visit

Dealer roadside assistance is worth remembering if your car is new. A battery that fails in the first year or two may be covered under the vehicle warranty, so calling the dealer first can save you money. Once the car is out of warranty, the advantage disappears.

Why a boost is often not enough in the UAE

A jump start works well when a healthy battery has been drained by something simple, such as headlights left on or a car parked for a long trip. It works much less well when the battery itself has worn out, and in the UAE that is the more common story.

Summer heat speeds up the chemical wear inside a battery, so many batteries here reach the end of their life after only a few summers. A worn battery can take a boost, start the car once, and then fail again the next morning in the same office car park, because it can no longer hold enough charge. Driving for half an hour after a boost does not fix that. Our guide on how long a car battery lasts in the UAE explains the effect of heat in more detail.

There is also the question of why the battery died. A battery that goes flat repeatedly may be fine, with the real fault being a failing alternator or something draining power while the car is parked. A boost alone will not show that. A proper battery test checks the battery’s health and the charging voltage with the engine running, so you know whether a new battery will actually solve the problem.

What to check in your policy schedule

Take five minutes at renewal to find these answers:

  1. Is roadside assistance included, or an add-on? Look for it on the schedule, not just the brochure.
  2. Which services are listed? Check specifically for “battery boost”, “jump start” or “dead battery”.
  3. How many call-outs a year? Note whether the limit is per service or overall.
  4. Towing limits. Is towing limited to the same emirate, a set distance, or to an agency garage?
  5. Geographic cover. UAE only, or Oman and the GCC as well, if you drive across borders.
  6. How to request help. The phone number or app named on your schedule.
  7. Exclusions. Off-road use, modified vehicles and commercial use are common ones.

Save the roadside assistance number from your schedule in your phone contacts, and download the insurer’s app if it has one.

When to call your insurer and when to call a battery service

Call your insurer when:

  • you have had an accident,
  • you need a tow because the problem is clearly not the battery (overheating, a warning light with loss of power, a mechanical noise),
  • you have a flat tyre or are locked out,
  • you are stuck off-road or outside the city.

Call a battery service directly when:

  • the engine cranks slowly or just clicks,
  • the dashboard is dim or completely dead,
  • the battery is more than two or three summers old,
  • it is the second time in a few weeks the car has failed to start,
  • you want the car fixed in one visit rather than boosted and sent to a shop.

If you are unsure whether you need a jump, a new battery or a tow, our guide to dead car battery: jump start, replace or tow walks through the decision. For a quick boost only, see our battery jump start service in Dubai. For problems beyond the battery, our garage team also offers 24/7 roadside assistance in Dubai and car towing, so one call covers you either way.

The short answer

Your insurance roadside assistance is valuable cover for accidents, tows and flat tyres, and it may well get a dead battery going again. It is not a battery replacement plan. When the battery is the problem, a car battery replacement in Dubai at your location, with free testing, free delivery and fitting, and up to 24 months warranty on the new battery, usually gets you back on the road faster and for good.

FAQ

More questions on this topic

Question not here? Send a message and a technician answers, not a bot.

Will my insurance pay for a new car battery?

Usually not. Roadside assistance on UAE motor policies is a service benefit that covers call-outs such as a battery boost or a tow. A battery that has worn out is treated as normal wear and tear, so the cost of a replacement battery is normally yours.

How do I find my insurer's roadside assistance number?

It is printed on your policy schedule or insurance card and on your insurer's official website or app. Save it in your phone when you renew, so you are not searching for it in a dark car park.

Is roadside assistance included in third-party insurance in the UAE?

It depends on the insurer and the plan. Some include a basic roadside package on third-party cover, others only on comprehensive plans or as a paid add-on. Your policy schedule lists whether it is included and any limits.

Is it faster to call a battery company than my insurer?

When the battery is the problem, often yes. A mobile battery van carries the tester and replacement batteries, so a jump, a diagnosis and a new battery can happen in one visit. With insurer assistance, a boost may get you going but a weak battery will need a second trip to a shop.
