The 12V battery in an electric car
An EV still has a small 12V battery that powers locks, screens and the computers that switch the main pack on. If it fails, the car will not wake up even with a full charge.
- Warnings like "12V battery needs service" usually appear weeks before failure.
- Older models use lead-acid; newer ones often use lithium-ion 12V units.
- A 12V boost can open the car so the low-voltage battery can be replaced.
- Never use an EV as a donor to jump start another car unless the maker allows it.

Does a BYD electric car have a 12V battery?
Yes. Every BYD, including fully electric models, has a 12V battery that powers the locks, screens and control units and switches on the high-voltage system. On many models it is a lithium iron phosphate type rather than lead-acid.
Can you jump-start a BYD Atto 3?
Yes, the 12V system can be boosted from the 12V terminals under the bonnet, after which the car powers up and the main pack takes over charging the 12V. If it drains again within days, the 12V battery needs testing or replacement.
Can a lead-acid battery replace a BYD lithium 12V battery?
It is not a like-for-like swap, because the charging and monitoring are set up for the original chemistry and the mounting differs. We fit a compatible replacement for the type your car came with and confirm the part from the VIN.
How long does a BYD battery last in the UAE?
